Sylvia Marshall Retires as EAS Graduate Student Academic Advisor II after 28 Years of Service
Marshall Joined the Department in 1997

Sylvia Marshall, who began working at the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in 1997, is retiring at the end of August to her home in Spring, Texas.

Sylvia MarshallA Houston native, she began working in the department when it was chaired by Dr. Stuart Hall, had only 18 faculty members, and enrolled a combined undergraduate and graduate population of 75 students. By contrast, the department’s present-day population is over 700 students.

Over her 28-year tenure as the graduate academic advisor, Marshall shouldered the tremendous growth in the size of the department including the growth of the workload in her role advising undergraduate and graduate students along with handling the processing for graduate applicants for the fall and spring admissions.

Her plans for retirement include relaxing and enjoying life in Spring, and not continuing her long, daily commute between Spring and UH. Over the past 6 months, she has been assisted by Jim Parker who will take over all of her roles as graduate academic advisor when she steps down on August 31.
