Geophysics Ph.D. Student Elita de Abreu: UH Energy Ambassador
First Geoscience Student to Serve as Ambassador

Elita de Abreu, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, was chosen as an Energy Ambassador, a new program of UH Energy.

Elita de AbreuUH Energy is an initiative that aims to integrate the University of Houston as a strategic partner of the energy industry by producing trained workforce personnel, strategic and technical leadership, research and development, and technology incubation.

The new program, Energy Ambassadors, is part of the leadership development initiative. The students selected are majors or minors in an energy-related field and show a strong capability for leadership and communication. The Ambassadors are responsible for planning, promoting and organizing events around campus, giving them the opportunity of meet energy industry leaders and improve their professional skills.

As an Ambassador, de Abreu intends to open her mind to a broader view of energy, how the world and leader countries, like the United States, have been planning for the future, and the impact of it on our community.

“I want to know what people apart from geoscience think about energy, which is my object of study. I want to talk to them, share points of view, and be able to do a great job together,” she said. “For me, this is the main advantage of being an Energy Ambassador.”

de Abreu is president of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists Wavelets, a student organization at UH, and is also a captain of one of the teams in the EVOLVE program.

She is a Ph.D. candidate in geophysics and is currently developing her studies on “Spectral Decomposition Applied to Seismostratigraphy and Multi Attribute Analyses.” After graduation, de Abreu hopes to work for an energy-related company where she can perform multidisciplinary and integrated work in the field of energy.
