Brief Bio
Expertise: Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Change
Professor Talbot’s interests
encompass regional-to-global scale atmospheric circulations and associated
transport of trace constituents. His research areas include: distribution,
speciation, and chemistry of mercury in the Earth’s atmosphere;
intercontinental transport of trace gases and aerosols; regional tropospheric
chemistry and climate change in southeastern Texas; climate-air quality
connections; biosphere-atmosphere exchange of trace gases; and development of
advanced instrumentation for the measurement of reactive trace gases and
aerosols (ground and aircraft platforms). He is Professor of Atmospheric
Chemistry and Director of the Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science
(ICAS). Dr. Talbot is also an adjunct Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry in the
School of Atmospheric Science at Nanjing University, Nanjing, China. He also
serves there as Vice Chair for the Institute for Climate and Global Change
Research at Nanjing University.
He received his Ph.D. from the
University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1981, and was subsequently awarded a
National Academy of Sciences NRC postdoctoral fellowship at NASA Langley
Research Center. His work on diverse topics has appeared in more than 250
papers in high-impact professional journals and he is in the top 0.5% of
researchers in Geosciences for citations to his publications (selected as an
ISI Highly Cited Scientist).
Dr. Talbot has been part of the NASA
Global Tropospheric Chemistry program since 1983, serving on the science team
for 20 major airborne expeditions supported by this program. He was also chief
scientist for the NOAA-AIRMAP program which focused on understanding regional
atmospheric chemistry, dynamics, and climate change in New England. In
collaboration with NOAA, AIRMAP conducted the New England Air Quality Study in
2002 (http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/csd/NEAQS/) and the international follow-up
study, ICARTT 2004 (www.esrl.noaa.gov/csd/ICARTT), which involved hundreds of scientists and 13 research
platforms from NOAA, NASA, DOE, and several European partners. He has received
NASA Group Achievement Awards for five airborne expeditions and was selected
for inclusion in the Academic Keys Who’s Who in Sciences Higher Education. He
has spoken at numerous press conferences involving the President of UNH, the
New Hampshire Governor, Admiral Conrad Lautenbacker of NOAA, various NASA upper
level administrators, and former U.S. Senator Judd Gregg.
On the national scene he has chaired
special sessions at AGU meetings, served as the UNH Member’s Representative to
the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, served on the Membership
Committee of UCAR, chaired that committee for several years, served as an
evaluator for the MacArthur Fellowship Program, served on NSF and EPA review
panels, and been an external evaluator for promotion/tenure at a number of
institutions.
Internationally he has served as a
nominator/evaluator for the Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences (Japan), the State
Natural Science Award (Peoples Republic of China), Japan Prize (Japan), and the
Natural Environment Research Council (United Kingdom). He serves on the
editorial board of several international journals, has been a guess editor of
journal special issues, and led the 2006 review of the Australian CSIRO
divisions working on climate and air quality.
